Don Valley Parkway Bridge Reconstruction

Over a six-month period between May and October 2000, Toronto’s Don Valley Parkway Bridge over the Don River underwent major reconstruction without the closure of a single lane during peak traffic periods.

TSH engineers were responsible for the design and traffic management of the bridge rehabilitation that included full deck replacement and construction of a safer, “tall wall” median barrier. Full-time inspection and construction administration services were also provided.

Widening the deck by about 2 m, engineers gained enough room to reconfigure the lanes and maintain all six lanes across the bridge. Construction activity took place during the day, with only the occasional night closing to realign the lanes for the next construction phase.

Two ramps of the Lawrence Avenue interchange were closed during construction for safety reasons, but traffic was fully maintained along two other ramps by adding temporary ramp connections and traffic signals.
