Totten Sims Hubicki were the
consulting architects and engineers for the new St. Leo Replacement
School project for the Durham Catholic District School Board.
Located in the Brooklin neighbourhood of Whitby
on Watford Street, the school was built to replace the existing
outdated and small St. Leo School which was not feasible to expand.
Originally scheduled to open in January 1999, TSH
was able to fast track the design process and the school was ready
for occupancy in September 1998. TSH project / design architect
Barry Knoll worked closely with senior Board staff to develop
the program and design for this JK to 8 elementary school. Because
the new school replaced an existing school, the school's principal
and superintendent were actively involved in the design process.
The Library Resource Centre has been made a focal
point in the school in both plan and elevation. Pulled forward
towards the street with large windows, the Library has been designed
to break up the overall mass of the building and create a visual
link with the community.
The school will also function as a community use
facility for the Town of Whitbys Parks and Recreation Department
who will offer evening programs in the building.
